On any given Instagram scroll you might come across a friend’s vacation pic with their feet in the sand, an acquaintance carrying the latest handbag, a relative with a new car, a new house, the perfect family photo. You think, Wow, they’ve got it together! But do they really? Maybe. Maybe not. The point, though, isn’t whether or not their life is perfect. The point is whether or not you’re subtly comparing your life to what you perceive theirs to be. You see, social media isn’t real life. It’s simply a highlight reel. So you can’t compare your everyday life to someone else’s highlight reelâ€"because that’s a game you’ll never win. In my new book Love Your Life, Not Theirs, I write about seven money habits you need to live the life you want. At the top of the list is a habit I call “Quit the Comparisons.” These days, comparison living is an epidemic. It’s everywhere. And the only real fix for comparison living is contentmentâ€"that’s simply the inner determination to be happy and fulfilled wherever you are with whatever you have. Content people are happy people. They’re satisfied. They don’t allow other people’s successes or failures to influence their view of themselves. Because the truth is stuff will never, ever make you happy. The vacation, the car, the houseâ€"all of that might give you a temporary high, but it will never lead to long-term happiness. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t have anything against stuff. I love a nice purse or a new piece of jewelry, but it’s important to make sure you own stuff without your stuff owning you. To be content, focus on everything you do haveâ€"whether that’s family, a home, friends, a good job. Try doing that for a few weeks, even a month, and see how it changes your perspective. My guess is you’ll be more content, satisfied and simply happier with life. So let’s quit the comparisons once and for all. There’s a better way to live, so start loving your life, not theirs! Again, the research has shown that if you manage to find a bright side to a challenging situation or unexpected curveball, you are more likely to be happy AND successfully complete the assigned task. So when your boss tells you to redo your presentation because she doesn’t like the format, focus on the fact that she had no complaints about what really mattered: the content! Make a list.  If you are feeling overwhelmed by all you have to do, taking the time to organize and prioritize your tasks will give you a chance to calm down and focus â€" and will also make you more efficient in the end. In addition, you will get an instant feeling of satisfaction every time you cross something off that list â€" or better yet, delete it! Take a break. Taking a five minute break to get a cup of coffee or just walking over to another office or cubicle is a great way to let your mind recharge. Just make sure that you have accomplished something â€" whether it’s a step in a process or a page in a report â€" before you take your break, so you’ll feel like you deserve it. The employer’s main purpose is to get some basic information: your salary requirements and availability. The interviewer also is trying to get a sense of who you are and how you might fit into the company culture. Smart candidates use an initial interview as an opportunity to learn more about the employer as well. In some respects it’s like a first date: each party is evaluating whether or not he or she wants to take the relationship further. If you make it through the initial screening interview, you’ll probably be scheduled for a more in-depth phone conversation or, in some cases, an interview via Skype. On the surface, virtual interviews seem like they are easier than in person. You don’t have to sneak out of the office for several hours for a half-hour interview. You don’t have to worry about finding the office. Unfortunately, because you’re not meeting face-to-face, it’s tempting to think that a phone or Skype interview is just a formality. Don’t make that mistake. Spend time preparing for any virtual interview: phone or Skype.   1) Make sure you’re in a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted. Avoid the urge to interview in your office (even if you have a private office) or in a well-trafficked area like a stairwell. The day you’re interviewing with a recruiter will be the day that your boss decides to take the stairs. 2) If you’re scheduled for a phone interview it’s always preferable to use a landline but if that’s not possible be sure that you’re someplace where you have good cell reception. It’s nearly impossible for a recruiter to conduct an interview when your voice is garbled, or your phone keeps cutting in and out. If you’re scheduled for a Skype interview test your camera, microphone, and Internet connection well before the interview. If you’re using a laptop, make sure the battery is fully charged. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, losing your cell-phone connection or being unable to connect via Skype doesn’t speak well for your ability to plan ahead. 3) Research the company and the person who will be interviewing you. Spend some time reviewing the company’s website. Look at their LinkedIn page and social media outlets. When the interviewer asks if you’re familiar with the company they aren’t expecting you to mutter “no” they’re expecting some intelligent comments. Take the time to visit the LinkedIn profiles of the people you’ll be talking with. It may help you find common ground.Prepare notes about the company and have them on hand for your call. Notes should include: information that you’ve gathered about the company; information about the person or persons you’re interviewing with; and any questions you have about the company and the position.
